Difference Between Phenylalanine and Sucralose

Phenylalanine, found in the artificial sweetener Equal, and sucralose, found in the artificial sweetener Splenda, are leading alternative sweeteners on the market. Despite their similar usage, they have difference structures.
  1. Origin

    • Phenylalanine has two chemical structures, one which naturally occurs in most foods containing protein and some nuts and seeds and another that is artificially made as aspartame, which is composed of aspartic acid and phenylalanine. Sucralose is created artificially from chemically modified sugar.

    Phenylalanine vs. Sucralose

    • Phenylalanine is an essential amino acid. A deficiency can cause confusion, a lack of energy, depression and memory problems. Unlike phenylalanine, sucralose has no nutritive roles or benefits.

    Side Effects of Sucralose

    • Sucralose is accepted as generally safe. However, sucralose may act as a migraine trigger and increase sugar cravings, as well as cause an increase in glucose (sugar) absorption.

    Side Effects of Phenylalanine

    • Some individuals with a condition called phenylketonuria experience an extreme intolerance to phenylalanine and should avoid aspartame. Large doses of aspartame may cause stomach upset and diarrhea.

    Alternatives

    • Ingesting either phenylalanine or sucralose in moderation hasn't been shown scientifically to carry risks for most people. However, natural alternatives such as honey or stevia can be considered as alternative sweeteners.
