How to Find a Nutritionist or Dietitian

Nutritionists and dietitians often work in hospitals and retirement communities, but they may also have their own practice. One way to find a dietitian is to ask your doctor for a referral. It may be more convenient for you to consult with a dietitian in your doctor's facility. If you prefer to find a nutritionist or dietitian on your own, check with the American Dietetic Association (ADA). This organization holds dietitians to certain quality standards.

Instructions

    • 1

Go to the website of the American Dietetic Association. Finding a nutritionist or dietitian through this organization ensures they are licensed and certified.

    • 2

Click on the "Find a Registered Dietitian" link. Select the "Personal" or "Business" option, depending on whether you need a dietitian for personal use or for an organization. Check "Only Registered Dietitians." Click "Next."

    • 3

Search by your state or zip code. If you search by zip code, you may select a mile radius to limit your search to dietitians near you.

    • 4

Refine your search according to the specialty you prefer. This is optional. You may search by specialties such as sports nutrition, diabetes, food allergies and other medical conditions and needs. Click "Search."

    • 5

Scan through your search results. If you did not have any search results, consider broadening your search. Your search results will detail addresses, phone numbers and the website (if available) of the registered dietitians.
