Mullein is a medicinal herb that has many purposes. It has numerous health benefits that provide relief for many ailments. Mullein acts as an antihistamine, antiviral and antibacterial. Additionally, its properties include pain relief and sedative. For nonmedicinal purposes, the seed of mullein is considered toxic and is useful as a pesticide, fungicide and even a poison. It relieves such ailments as bleeding of the lungs, asthma, hacking cough and irritation of the mucous membranes in the respiratory system. Additionally, mullein treats diarrhea, chest problems and even tumors. The herb is useful as an antibacterial medicinal as well. Mullein is best ingested as a tea. Combine two teaspoons of dried mullein leaves and flowers with boiling water and allow it to steep for about 10 minutes. Strain the tea of the leaves before drinking it. Sunburn and Pain Relief

Mullein has anti-inflammatory properties that aid in sunburn relief. Apply a poultice of mullein leaves topically to the sunburn to help alleviate pain and soothe the burn. The herb in oil form is also effective in the treatment of migraine headaches and earaches. Mouth ulcers and gum ulcers also respond well to mullein.
Insecticide and Poison

The leaves and stems of the mullein plant are not toxic, but the seeds are considered potentially harmful with repeated use. While they have no health value, mullein seeds are useful as a poison. Each seed contains an insecticide called rotenone, which kills bugs, pests, and fish.
