What Are the Dangers of Soy Tofu Foods?

Soy is a plant native to Asia that is a member of the pea family. It has been used for dietary consumption for over 5,000 years and was used to create tofu in China during the 2nd century. Tofu is a soft, cheese-like food made from soy milk. Soybeans, including in tofu form, are high in dietary protein and may provide some health benefits, ranging from enhanced brain performance to reduced menopausal symptoms. However, there are potentially some negative side effects to consuming soy tofu.
  1. Increased Hormone Levels

    • Soy tofu foods are high in photoestrogens, which are similar to hormones in humans. Large consumption of soy may result in symptoms of hormonal imbalance, such as hot flashes. In addition, women at risk for hormone-sensitive conditions such as ovarian cancer should discuss consumption of soy with their doctor due to possible effects on estrogen levels in the body.

    Increased Uterine Lining

    • According to the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, some scientific evidence supports the theory that consumption of soy may increase or thicken the lining of the uterus in a condition called endometrial hyperplasia, which can lead to cancer. More research is needed in this area.

    Stomach Upset

    • Consumption of soy tofu foods may lead to stomach discomfort in some people, including nausea, bloating and/or constipation.

    Allergies

    • Some people may experience allergic symptoms to soy after consuming tofu, including rashes and/or breathing problems.
