Egg White Calorie & Protein Information

Eating only the whites of eggs is a common way to avoid the cholesterol and fat found in the egg yolks. Egg whites are a good source of protein and maintain status as a low-calorie food.

    • The white of a large egg contains approximately 16 calories, in contrast to the 71 calories contained in a whole egg.

    Protein

    • Of the 6 g protein in a whole egg, 4 g are in the egg white. This makes the egg white a better source of protein than the egg yolk.

    Fat

    • Egg whites contain less than half a gram of fat, as the fat in the egg is concentrated in the egg yolks. A large egg yolk has 5 g fat, 2 g of which are saturated fat.

    Sodium

    • Besides protein and a tiny bit of fat, the only other element of an egg white that appears on a nutrition label is 55 mg of sodium.

    Cholesterol

    • The main component of the egg yolk that people avoid is the cholesterol, as the yolk of a large egg contains 210 mg of cholesterol, or 70 percent of the recommended daily value. Egg whites contain no cholesterol.
