Importance of Electrolyte Balance in the Body

The human body is made up of over 60 percent water. That water contains a mixture of minerals, including sodium, calcium and potassium. Those minerals collectively are known as electrolytes.
  1. Loss

    • Electrolytes and water are lost through kidney functions, sweat and the moisture in breath. They need to be replaced through food and drink.

    Thirst

    • Thirst is the first sign that something needs to be done. Water is replaced through drinking, which helps the overall electrolyte balance.

    Hyponatremia

    • A low sodium level in known as hyponatremia. This can be a problem with endurance athletes and distance runners. Symptoms include confusion, weakness and drowsiness. The level can be restored gradually through intravenous fluids.

    Hyperkalemia

    • Hyperkalemia is a high potassium level. It is usually caused by kidney failure or medications. It can cause heart problems, and prescription drugs are used to treat it.

    Hypocalcemia

    • A low calcium level is called hypocalcemia. Symptoms are weakness and numbness. It's treated by taking calcium orally.

    In Conclusion

    • Electrolytes are an important part of the makeup of the human body. Too much of too little of the minerals that make up the electrolytes can cause serious problems. A doctor can give more information.
