As the body grows from infant through childhood and on to adulthood, there are many factors that affect how the body develops. Some are natural, such as genetics, while others are environmental factors, including nourishment. Poor nourishment of the body can greatly affect the body at any age, especially a body that is still developing.-

The body requires certain nutrients to develop properly. Proteins contain amino acids which are used to support new growth. Carbohydrates fuel muscle activity as well as the brain and nervous system. Fats provide a source of stored energy and insulate the body. Minerals and vitamins aid in maintaining body growth and functions.

Malnourishment is a nutritional deficiency in which the body is receiving an inadequate amount of calories, proteins, vitamins or minerals.
Short-Term Effects of Malnourishment

The effects of malnourishment in children include lower attention span, tiredness, stunted growth, reduced body mass, lower immunity and the delayed onset of puberty.
Long-Term Effects of Malnourishment

Continued malnourishment can cause a decrease in the intelligence level of the individual, with continued physical and intellectual deficits that carry into adulthood.
