Difference Between Leverage & Free Weights

Free weight training refers to an exercise regimen that relies on the use of independent weight equipment such as dumbbells and barbells to increase muscle mass and strength. Leverage weight training describes utilization of machines that generally include plates that can be added or removed to adjust weight-resistance. Both free weight and machine-based leverage workouts can present a variety of advantages and disadvantages.
  1. Advantages of free weights

    • Stabilizing muscles, which help control movement, are better trained with free weights than through the use of machines. Free weight training also requires the use of more muscles for a given exercise, allowing for the development of more natural movements, such as those that might be used in athletic competitions. However, use of free weights can offer more possibility for injury, especially if misused.

    Advantages of leverage equipment

    • Leverage training offers a safer alternative to free weights, and makes it’s easier to target specific muscles for development. Leverage machines ensure proper motion in an exercise routine because they force the limbs along a certain preset course, and eliminate the effect of momentum or inertia.

    Other factors on free weights

    • Free weights are less expensive than machines. They are also smaller, making them easier to store and transport, and they are more durable. Like all machines, leverage equipment may break or become damaged (but are more durable than machines that rely on pulleys or cords).

    Other factors on leverage equipment

    • Due to the safety factor, leverage machines are typically seen as a better alternative for beginners than free weights.

    General

    • Both a leverage weight program and a free weight program (or a combination of these) can provide increased muscle mass and more strength. Whether on a machine or using a barbell, a lifter must push himself to achieve his goals. Safety precautions must always be observed since injury can occur with any equipment.
