Replacement Food for Statin Drugs

Medications are often given to help reduce cholesterol. Eating a well-balanced diet can prevent the need for medication. After medication is prescribed, a low-cholesterol diet may even reverse the need for medication.
  1. Statins

    • Statins are cholesterol-lowering drugs that work with the liver to prevent synthesis of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol. Examples of statins include simvastatin, atorvastatin and lovastatin.

    Saturated and Trans Fat

    • Saturated fat and trans fat should be avoided to prevent LDL cholesterol synthesis in the body. Meat and dairy products are high in saturated fat. Trans fat is found abundantly in fried foods and processed baked goods.

    Monounsaturated Fats

    • For a healthy cholesterol level, monounsaturated fats should be consumed in replacement of saturated fat. Foods high in this fat are olive oil, canola oil, avocado and many nuts and seeds.

    Dietary Cholesterol

    • Cholesterol is present in the body, but it is also a component of some foods. Dietary cholesterol increases LDL cholesterol and is not an essential nutrient. It is found in any food containing animal products.

    Fiber

    • Fiber may be beneficial to decreasing cholesterol. Fiber is found in fruits, vegetables and whole grains.
