Purifed Water Vs. Spring Water

Purified water has been distilled or otherwise treated in order to remove its impurities. Spring water is very clear water that comes from surface springs. Unlike purified water, spring water may contain some minerals, although not as many as mineral water.
  1. Purified Water Features

    • Filtering, distilling or otherwise processing water makes purified water. "Purified water" is a blanket term for a number of different treated waters, from distilled water to deionized water.

    Spring Water Features

    • According to FDA regulations, any water labeled as "spring water" must come from a natural spring, and cannot have any minerals removed from or added to it. However, spring water may be treated in order to disinfect it.

    Uses

    • Different types of purified water have different purposes. Filtered tap water, for instance, is often used as drinking water, while distilled water is often used in scientific applications. Spring water may be used for cooking or cleaning, but more often is used as a beverage.

    Significance

    • Purifying water often removes its taste, as well as some minerals.

    Considerations

    • While bottled spring water and some types of purified water are popular beverages, it is debatable whether these waters are better for you than tap water. Tap water sometimes contains fluoride, as well as other minerals that are beneficial to health.
