Natural Foods for Hot Flashes

Hot flashes are sudden, periodic increases in body temperature and are the most common symptom of menopause. About 75 percent of women will at some point experience hot flashes, but the frequency and intensity will vary. Making adjustments to your lifestyle and diet have been effective natural remedies in managing hot flashes.
  1. What to Avoid

    • Certain foods and beverages may be contributors of hot flashes, so you should avoid them when possible. Spicy foods as well as hot beverages can cause hot flashes. Avoid alcohol as well as any caffeinated beverage such as coffee and tea.

    Herbs

    • Black cohosh is a plant-based herb that reduces menopausal symptoms, including hot flashes. Studies have shown mixed results, although many women report it effective. Although not yet proven, there have been some links relating black cohosh to liver problems. Evidence also suggests that evening primrose oil can reduce hot flashes; however, side effects can include nausea, diarrhea and indigestion. Always talk to your physician before taking any herbal remedies.

    Flaxseed

    • A summer 2007 study performed by the Mayo Clinic and published in the "Journal of the Society for Integrative Oncology" reported preliminary findings that flaxseed does help reduce hot flashes. After six weeks of consuming 4 tbsp. of flaxseeds each day, participants reported a 50 percent reduction in hot flashes. There must be more research to confirm these findings, but women can start with 2 tbsp. each day and see if it is helpful in managing hot flashes.
