Diet For Dry Flaky Skin
Dry skin can be troublesome, and flaky skin can be embarrassing. Instead of using an expensive face wash with potentially-harmful chemicals, analyze what you are eating first. Your diet can easily affect the quality of your skin, and a few quick and easy fixes can help your skin radiate good health.-
Eat Good-for-You Fats
-
Olives and avocados are full of essential fatty acids, which help keep cells lubricated. Dry skin is caused by a lack of moisture and often these essential fats. Allison Tannis writes in her book, "Feed Your Skin, Starve Your Wrinkles," that avocados also contain carotenoid lutein, B-vitamins and potassium. All of these nutrients contribute to keeping skin moisturized and healthy.
To combat dry skin, add slices of avocados to salads or sandwiches, or eat a whole one with salt and pepper sprinkled on top. Pumpkin seeds, raw nuts and olives are also all high in minerals and other skin-boosting properties.
Drink Plenty of Water
-
Keeping the cell layer lubricated requires fluids, especially water. Think of the way mud looks when it begins to dry: it develops cracks and becomes dry. Your skin is the same way. Without water, cracks develop due to the dryness. Water, however, allows cells to regenerate and function properly.
At work, keep a bottle of water at your desk and refill it a few times throughout the day. Before snacks and throughout meals, drink a glass of water. Though your bladder may not be appreciative, your skin will be very thankful.
Avoid Junk Food
-
Your appearance can be a reflection of what you eat. Therefore, a diet full of junk food can manifest itself in the form of dry, blotchy skin. Phyllis Balch, author of the book, "Prescription for Nutritional Healing," advises those who suffer from dry skin to stay away from cigarettes, alcohol, caffeine, soft drinks, sugary candy and potato chips.
On the Surface
-
While cooking with coconut oil is said to be good for your heart, applying it directly to your face is incredibly beneficial for skin health, clearing away dead skin. Purchase organic, virgin coconut oil and store it in a cool, dark location to prevent oxidation. Clean your face first using just a washcloth and water, and then apply a small amount of oil all over your face. Though your face will be shiny, you should see results within a few days.
