Canola Oil Nutritional Facts

Derived from a plant bred from rapeseed, canola oil has a light taste that makes it suitable for a variety of uses.
  1. Saturated Fats

    • Canola oil is very low in saturated fat and contains zero artery-clogging trans fat, thereby boosting its reputation as a heart-healthy oil. Furthermore, it is high in mono- and polyunsaturated fats, which are considered desirable fats because they do not raise LDL (bad) cholesterol levels.

    Omega 3 Fatty Acids

    • Canola oil is also rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which help protect against heart disease, cancer and other serious health conditions.

    Vitamins and Minerals

    • Just one tablespoon of canola oil provides 25 percent of the Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA) of vitamin E. However, it does not contain other vitamins or minerals.

    Other Nutrients

    • Canola oil is not a significant source of other nutrients. It contains no protein, fiber, sodium or carbohydrates.

    Controversy

    • Traditional rapeseed oil has been used for agricultural and industrial purposes and is not considered suitable for human consumption. Some people have questioned the safety of consuming canola oil due to its connection to the rapeseed plant; however, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and industry experts maintain that canola oil poses no health risk to humans.
