Normal LDL Cholesterol Level

When you have too much LDL cholesterol in your blood, it can begin to clog your arteries, which can lead to a heart attack or stroke. It's important to understand what constitutes a "normal" LDL cholesterol level.
  1. Optimal LDL

    • Cholesterol levels below 100 mg/dL are optimal for men and women who are at high risk of heart disease. Cholesterol levels below 70 mg/dL are optimal for men and women who are at very high risk of heart disease.

    Near Optimal and Above Optimal LDL

    • For the average person, cholesterol levels between 100 and 129 mg/dL are considered near optimal.

    Borderline High LDL

    • For the average person, cholesterol levels between 130 and 159 mg/dL are considered borderline high.

    High LDL

    • People with cholesterol levels in the 160 to 189 mg/dL range are in the high range.

    Very High LDL

    • People with cholesterol levels over 190 mg/dL range are in the very high range.
