What Are the Benefits of Acidopholus?
Lactobacillus acidophilus (L. acidophilus), which translates to acid-loving milk bacterium, occurs naturally in the intestines, mouth and vagina. Its acidic properties have been found to aid digestive ailments, yeast infections and the immune system. L. acidophilus is most often found in yogurts sold and produced in America.-
Vaginal Infections
-
Although the Mayo Clinic and the National Institutes of Health report that further research is needed into the ability of L. acidophilus to cure vaginal yeast infections through vaginal suppository, there are several clinical studies done by NIH that support its use. Clinical evidence studied by the University of Maryland Medical Center also suggests that eating yogurt with the bacteria can be beneficial for treating vaginal yeast infections.
Diarrhea
-
According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, there is clinical evidence that suggests eating yogurt (with acidophilus) or taking probiotics (a supplement containing the bacteria) can help treat "traveler's diarrhea," a common reaction to being in a foreign country.
Antibiotics
-
Antibiotics destroy all bacteria in one's body, in an effort to fight a bad infection. Eating yogurts or taking probiotics can help replace the good bacteria in the body destroyed by antibiotics.
Sources of Acidophilus
-
Foods that contain L. Acidophilus include milk and yogurt enriched with the bacteria. Miso, a thick paste made from fermented soybeans and barley or rice malt often used in soup, naturally contains acidophilus. Tempeh is also made of fermented soybeans, but is formed into a patty shape, much like a veggie burger. It too contains acidophilus.
Prebiotics stimulate the growth of probiotics, and according to the University of Maryland Medical Center are "found in breast milk, onions, tomatoes, bananas, honey, garlic and wheat."
Warning
-
Anytime you increase your use of a dietary supplement, you should consult your primary health care provider (doctor or nurse practitioner), particularly if you are taking any medications.
