Reducing Homocysteine Levels
-
1
If test results indicate a record of elevated homocysteine, obtain a copy of the report for recordkeeping, and ask the health care provider about B-vitamins, trace minerals, creatine, or any item that is outside or near the reference range.
-
2
Obtain a nutritional consult to review dietary intake information and possible underlying health or eating conditions.
Incorporate healthy eating habits outlined in the consult, which may include eating more fruits and vegetables.
-
3
Take a daily multivitamin or B-vitamin complex:
The multivitamin should contain 100 to 200 percent of the recommended daily allowance (RDA) for folic acid, vitamin B12 and vitamin B6.
-
4
Take a creatine supplement (one to five grams daily).
Homocysteine was reported to drop by 50 percent in an individual taking five grams of creatine/day with elevated homocysteine (hyperhomocysteinemia).
