Instead of trying the newest fad diet or wonder cure for weight loss, try eating key nutrients that help whittle your middle. Scientific studies examining the link between certain nutrients provide us with a guide for a healthy approach to slimming a bulging gut.-
Omega-3s
-
Numerous studies published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition report the positive effects of Omega-3 fatty acids on weight loss. In one study two groups of women were given the same diet, but with one difference. One group consumed food with Omega-3s, the other did not. The Omega-3 group lost 1½ lbs. more torso fat than the other group (see References 1). Furthermore, according to nutraingredients.com, researchers from the University of Navarra in Spain and the University of Iceland found that Omega-3-rich foods keep people satiated longer (see References 2). Salmon, tuna, flaxseed, shrimp and tofu provide an abundance of Omega-3s.
Calcium and Vitamin D
-
Many clinical studies have yielded a strong correlation between calcium and Vitamin D and weight loss. For example, the Women's Health Initiative Study found that postmenopausal women who consumed calcium/vitamin D supplements gained less weight than those who didn't take the supplements. Dr. Bette Caan, the primary researcher, reported these findings in the Archives of Internal Medicine (see References 3). In another study at the University of Tennessee, scientists compared the diets of two groups of overweight people. Both groups ate the same low-calorie diet, but one group had three daily servings of calcium-rich foods and the other group had only one daily serving. The group eating three daily servings lost 70 percent more weight and 64 percent more body fat (see References 2). Dark, leafy vegetables like spinach, kale and broccoli are the best sources of calcium. Vitamin D is found in salmon, mackerel, tuna, tofu, soy milk, and fish oil.
Fiber
-
A fiber-rich diet can promote weight loss because foods high in fiber typically have less calories yet induce feelings of fullness sooner and for a longer period than non-fiber foods. Fiber also maintains an even blood sugar level, which aids in weight loss. Eating whole-grain foods and plenty of fruits and vegetables is an easy way to consume dietary fiber.
Vitamin B-12
-
Vitamin B-12 helps with the battle of the bulge by increasing your metabolism and energy level. The metabolic increase burns more calories, and increased energy levels may provide you with the boost you need for exercise, another key to reshaping your torso. Dietary sources of Vitamin B-12 include salmon, eggs, poultry, and dairy products
