Diet for Prostate Care
The prostate is a small, walnut-shaped gland that is a part of the male reproductive system. It produces seminal fluid, the substance that nourishes and transports sperm. Prostate health is very important for men, especially males above 50, as an enlarged prostate (benign prostate hyperplasia, or BPH) and prostate cancer are common conditions in middle-aged and older men. There is evidence, however, that certain dietary choices can help promote prostate health and reduce the risk of prostate cancer.-
Foods To Seek Out
-
Omega-3 fatty acids have been found to reduce the risk of prostate enlargement. Cold-water fish, such as salmon, sardines and mackerel, are rich in omega-3. Also, adding flaxseed oils to salad dressings and vegetables will increase the intake of this nutrient. Pumpkin seeds are another good source to consider adding to your diet.
Be sure to have a generally healthy diet, including plenty of fruits and vegetables. And take a full compliment of vitamins and minerals, including vitamin C, beta carotene, and zinc supplements. Saw palmetto has been suggested to have some benefits for prostate health, so consider this supplement as well.
Foods To Avoid
-
Avoid caffeine and tobacco entirely. These substances irritate the prostate and may increase the risk of prostate-related illnesses. Also avoid beer, which contains the hormone prolactin. Prolactin is thought to increase the rate of prostate cell reproduction, which is thought to be the underlying cause of prostate enlargement.
Other information suggests that foods that are high in cholesterol or refined carbohydrates may increase risks of prostate problems. Reduce your intake of beef, whole milk, white bread and sweets.
