What Foods Contain Potassium Benzoate?

Potassium benzoate and sodium benzoate are preservatives used to prevent mold growth and bacteria. When combined with ascorbic acid (Vitamin C), however, benzoate preservatives can form benzenes, which are known to cause cancer.
    • Soda contains potassium benzoate, a preservative.

    Naturally Occuring Benzoates

    • Potassium and sodium benzoate naturally occur in some foods such as berries, cranberries, apples and cinnamon.

    Beverages

    • Benzoate preservatives are commonly used in acidic beverages such as soda, lemonade and energy drinks.

    Non-Food Uses

    • Sodium and potassium benzoate can also be used to preserve things like mouthwash and dietary supplements.

    Safety

    • Benzoate preservatives have been tested and considered safe by the Food & Drug Administration, but these tests only account for the effect of potassium and sodium benzoate by themselves, not in combination with Vitamin C.

    Avoiding Potassium Benzoate

    • To avoid potassium and sodium benzoate, eliminate soda and other beverages with preservatives. Foods with naturally occurring benzoates do not have a high enough concentration to be harmful, except in excessive amounts.
