Fish Oil Studies & Information

Fish oil is beneficial for the body because of its essential omega-3 fatty acids. Other names for fish oil include DHA, omega-3 and EPA.
  1. Studies

    • The American Heart Association concluded that consuming fish oil reduces the risk of heart problems. According to the University of Michigan Health System, fish oil normally lowers LDL cholesterol levels but can actually increase LDL cholesterol levels for some people.

    Benefits

    • Benefits of consuming fish oil include reducing the risk for heart problems, lowering triglycerides, and reducing the risk of heart attacks and stroke, according to the Mayo Clinic.

    Dietary Sources

    • Dietary sources of fish oil include cold-water fish such as halibut, sardines, tuna, herring, salmon and mackerel. Alternatively, some people choose to get their fish oil from supplements.

    Supplements

    • Fish oil supplements are relatively inexpensive, generally $15 of less, and can be taken in the form of liquid or in a tasteless capsule.

    Concerns

    • The effects of fish oil are not all positive. High doses of omega-3 fatty acids have the potential to increase the risk for bleeding. Fish oil may cause gastrointestinal problems and diarrhea. Also, some fish have high mercury levels, which is harmful for pregnant or nursing women and in large doses.
