Specific Carbohydrate Diet for Acidosis

Acidosis is a condition in which your body has excessive acid in the blood. Acidosis can be caused by a variety of factors, including kidney disease, diabetes, cancer or alcohol consumption. While these encompass some of the more major types of acidosis, mild acidosis can still be caused through inattention to your diet. Foods are either acidic or alkaline, and overconsumption of acidic foods can have the net effect of rendering your blood mildly acidic, placing you in a state of acidosis.
  1. Acidosis Effects

    • Understand the potential risks of acidosis to understand the necessity for a cure. According to a study conducted at the University Medical School in Scotland and published in the May 1988 issue of the European Journal of Applied Physiology and Occupational Physiology, acidosis can negatively affect your energy output, causing you to reach a state of exhaustion quicker than you would have otherwise. Furthermore, according to a study conducted at the Kantonsspital Bruderholz in Switzerland and published in the American Journal of Renal Physiology, a prolonged state of acidosis can also reduce bone density, contributing to the development of osteoporosis.

    Acidosis Diet

    • Consume a diet consisting of more alkaline foods, e.g. fruits and vegetables, and fewer acidic foods, e.g. meats, dairy and grains, to move your body toward a more alkaline state. Some examples of highly alkaline foods include figs, plums, white beans and lima beans, whereas some examples of highly acidic foods include oats, oat bran, rye and all types of cheeses.

While on a specific carb diet to curb acidosis, you should avoid consumption of all of the overly acidic foods just mentioned while simultaneously trying to consume at least one of the ultra-alkaline foods. In general, however, each meal should consist of zero high-acidic foods, at least one high-alkaline food, an additional fruit or vegetable, and a lean protein source (seafood, chicken, turkey, or low-fat beef). Wholly eliminate grains and dairy for the time being, as there is no nutrient in either group that you cannot obtain through other means. For example, the fiber in grains can be obtained through the added fruits and vegetables you will be eating. Sticking to meals consisting of fruits, vegetables, beans, and lean protein will offer you the best chance of eliminating acidosis while providing your body with essential vitamins and nutrients.
