Fruits or Vegetables That Cleanse the Colon

Many Americans suffer from constipation, a common reason for doctor visits in the United States. One of the most powerful tools to achieve a clean, healthy colon is adequate intake of fruits and vegetables.
  1. Significance

    • Fruits and vegetables are rich fiber. It is the fiber that helps to bulk up and soften stool, for smoother transit through the colon.

    Amount

    • According to the Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee, "2 cups of fruit and 2 1/2 cups of vegetables per day are recommended for a reference 2,000 calorie intake, with higher or lower amounts depending on the calorie level." Following this recommendation based on your calorie intake, along with eating a wholesome, balanced diet should keep the colon clean.

    Preparation

    • When trying to add more fruits and vegetables to your diet, spend time determining the foods you enjoy most. Make a list of 15 to 20 of your favorite fruits and vegetables before planning out your diet and going food shopping.

    Be Creative

    • Incorporate a fruit and/or vegetable into almost every meal and snack during the day. Banana slices and strawberries might be added to cereal with milk for breakfast. Half of an apple could complement sides of cabbage, sweet potatoes and baked chicken for dinner.

    Considerations

    • Be sure to drink plenty of water when increasing fruit and vegetable intake. Gradually increase your fiber intake to avoid gas and bloating.
