Peanut Butter Nutrition

Peanut butter officially must contain a 90 percent minimum of peanuts and no artificial sweeteners, colors or preservatives---but the healthy version comes without sugar as well.
  1. Protein and Fiber

    • A 1 oz. serving of peanut butter provides 8 g of plant protein, more than any other legume or nut. Its 1.9 g of fiber is about 1/10 of what you need each day---between two slices of whole-wheat bread triples that amount.

    Fat

    • Peanut butter is high in anti-inflammatory mono- and polyunsaturated fats, which help reduce LDL cholesterol (the bad kind) and lower the risk of heart disease and diabetes.

    Vitamins

    • One serving supplies almost 1/4 of the daily requirement for the antioxidant vitamin E. Niacin regulates digestive and nervous systems and blood-sugar levels. B complex vitamins help supply the brain with mood elevators dopamine, epinephrine and serotonin.

    Other Nutrients

    • Peanut butter also includes magnesium, folate, copper and arginine, all of which help prevent heart disease.

    Healthy Treats

    • Look in your health food store for the machine that grinds the peanuts on site.
Spread peanut butter on carrots, celery, broccoli, cauliflower or apples.
Add a tablespoon of peanut butter to your morning smoothie.
