How to Create a Food Shopping List

Grocery shopping can be a distressing and time-consuming experience for many consumers. If you shop without a food list, it is easy to go significantly over your budget. The absence of a grocery list also makes you more susceptible to purchasing junk food and unnecessary items. Although making a detailed shopping list at home takes a little effort and consideration, it will often save you money and time at the grocery store.

Categorize your list by the type of item and leave blank spaces for foods under each category. Start with dry and canned foods, then make a section for fruits and vegetables, meats and dairy products. Shopping for perishable items last will prevent spoilage.

Check your pantry, cupboards and refrigerator and write down each food that is a necessity. Look over planned recipes and make sure you do not need to pick up additional ingredients at the market. Speak with your family or roommates to see if they have specific requests.

Locate the weekly grocery ad and any coupons you may already have. Add foods that are on sale to your list and highlight them or make a note to buy the brand that is discounted.

Review your list a final time. Post the list to your refrigerator or in a visible spot in case you need to add an item before your supermarket trip. Returning to the grocery store for one or two items is inefficient and frustrating.
