Type of Acidic Foods

Diets high in acidic foods can cause health problems in individuals such as ulcers, migraines, teeth temperature sensitivity, tooth decay, acid reflux, dry skin, malaise, mood disorders---and dull skin, hair and nails.
  1. Protein

    • Most proteins---including pork, beef, lamb, turkey, shellfish and finned fish---contain high acidity levels that become more acidic due to preparation in oils, sauces, butter and batter containing saturated fats and eggs.

    Dairy

    • Dairy products such as eggs, yogurt, milk, cheese and ice cream are acidic foods that are commonly included in baked goods, smoothies, creamy soups, instant meals, snack foods, chocolate and coffee---and are widely used in Italian dishes, Mexican entrees and French cuisine.

    Grains and Nuts

    • Breads and pasta, peanuts, cashews, pistachios, honey and foods that contain artificial sweeteners and seasonings are high in acidic content.

    Acidic and Alkaline Fruit

    • Acidic fruits such as strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, apples, oranges and bananas can be balanced by consumption of alkaline fruits including lime, watermelon, avocado, grapefruit and tomato.

    Balance Acidic Food with Vegetables

    • Vegetables are alkaline foods, in addition to most seeds and grains, flax and olive oils, vegetable broth, water and condiments such as hummus and tahini. Combining alkaline-based foods with acidic foods balances nutritional intake for healthy pH.
