Nutrition & Multiple Sclerosis

Multiple sclerosis is a degenerative disease that progresses relentlessly throughout its course. Some doctors believe that certain foods can provide some benefit for people who suffer from MS.
  1. Low-Fat Diet

    • According to Dr. Alan Gaby, co-author of "The Natural Pharmacy," people who follow a low-fat diet early after diagnosis have a better chance of slowing the progression of MS than those who do not.

    Vegetable Protein

    • Eating vegetable protein may decrease the risk of some MS conditions. Select foods rich in vitamin C, thiamine, riboflavin, calcium and potassium.

    Dairy

    • Non-fat and low-fat varieties of milk, powdered milk, buttermilk, cottage cheese, cheese, sour cream, yogurt and ice cream are all beneficial foods for MS sufferers.

    Grains

    • Whole-grain breads and cereals are the most beneficial for people suffering from MS. Select whole-wheat bread, sourdough, English muffins and bagels.

    Foods to Avoid

    • People who suffer from MS should avoid eating sweets, butter, margarine, shortening, cocoa butter, coconut oil, palm oil and hydrogenated oil.
