Kidney Detox Herbs
Whenever we digest food, residual toxins and waste may accumulate in the kidneys. If these toxins are left without being cleaned out, they could lead to kidney stones and other problems. Many herbs do a fine job of ridding the kidneys of toxins without robbing the body of electrolytes and important nutrients. A few of the herbs include juniper berries, bearberries and parsley.-
Juniper Berries
-
Juniper has an ancient history. According to legend, the family of Jesus hid behind a juniper bush while fleeing from Egypt. Juniper also used to be the primary flavoring in gin. In addition to a tonic for the kidneys, juniper berries discourage fluid retention. Be careful not to take juniper if you think you may be pregnant---Native Americans used it as a natural birth control. Steep one teaspoon of the leaves in a cup of boiling water for 20 minutes. Take one cup three times a day.
Bearberry
-
Also known as uva ursi, this herb was named bearberry because bears like to eat it. According to the book "The Ways of Herbs" by Michael Tierra, bearberry grows in many parts of North America. Native Americans long used it as a remedy for bladder infections. In addition to its cleansing properties, the herb is antibacterial and fights infection.Combine one ounce of bearberry and some ginger root. Pour one pint of boiling water over the herbs and cover, letting it stand until it reaches room temperature. Drink three cups per day.
Parsley
-
Native to the Mediterranean area, parsley was often planted in monasteries by monks in the middle ages for its medicinal and nutritional value. The leaves and the roots can be used for urinary tract infections, and the root is especially good for getting rid of stones in the kidneys. Add one ounce of parsley to a pint of boiling water. Once it cools, reheat only what you plan to drink. Take two to three cups daily.
