What Vitamins Are Good for the Eyes?

Although eating a well-balanced diet can help maintain eye health for many people, recent studies have pointed to specific vitamins, minerals and other substances as being good for the eyes.
  1. Vitamins

    • Vitamins A, C and E have been found to be important in eye health; vitamin A is vital for the retina, and some think vitamin C may play a role in preventing glaucoma--although it is not a cure or a treatment.

    Minerals

    • Minerals such as zinc are important for eye health by reducing the risk of advanced macular degeneration; selenium is also important.

    Carotenoids

    • Carotenoids such as lutein and zeaxanthin are found in large amounts in different parts of the eye and protect the eye from damage from free radicals and blue light.

    Bioflavonoids

    • Bioflavonoids are plant compounds that have been found to prevent the development of cataracts and may slow down the development of glaucoma.

    Fatty Acids

    • Omega-3 fatty acids such as DHA have been found to lower the risk of age-related macular degeneration; consuming more fish, nuts or olive oil can be protective.

    Considerations

    • With these vitamins and minerals, one must make sure not to take too much which can have adverse effects. A multivitamin supplement is often enough; before starting on any medication, be sure to consult a physician.
