How Whey Is Derived

Whey protein is produced from milk and is a by-product of cheese production. Most supplements sold in stores today come from cow's milk.
Process

Cheese is produced by curdling and straining milk. Whey is the product that remains, and is separated from milk after curdling.
Finished Product

After the whey is separated, it is often combined with artificial flavoring and sold in powder form as a nutritional supplement. There are two types of whey produced. Whey protein isolate is the most concentrated form and contains up to 90 percent protein and very little fat or lactose. Whey protein concentrate may contain anywhere from 20 to 89 percent protein and corresponding amounts of fat and lactose.
