Vitamins for Kidney Health

Everyday, your kidneys filter out two quarts of waste and excess water from 200 liters of blood. Without this function, your body would become overloaded with toxins. To keep you kidneys healthy, it is important to take vitamins to aid kidney circulation and healing.
  1. Vitamin D

    • People with chronic kidney problems or kidney dialysis patients tend to be low in vitamin D. Vitamin D is activated in the kidneys into it's usable form, calciferol. Without vitamin D, your body struggles to control levels of phosphorus and calcium levels in the blood. Parathyroid glands begin to produce the parathyroid hormone in order to take calcium from the bones. This leads to bone weakness and pain. You must get your blood work done before you take a large dose of vitamin D, however, because it can cause health problems.

    Kidney Stones

    • People at risk for kidney stones have found supplements of vitamin B6 and magnesium helpful. In some cases, a high intake of B6 may decrease levels of urinary oxalate levels. In order for kidney stones to form, the body must have high oxalate and calcium phosphate levels in the urine.

Calcium phosphate and magnesium ammonium phosphate stones, kidney stones can dissolve when you make the urine more acidic. One way of doing that is by taking vitamin C. Though certain kidney stones are made up of oxalate, taking vitamin C will not increase your chances of forming these stones.

    Other Nutrients

    • There are numerous other nutrients that you can take to promote kidney health. Take 1,500mg of calcium and 750mg of magnesium daily. These two minerals should be taken together to ensure a healthy balance. Coenzyme A helps remove toxins from the body. Vitamin B6 not only reduces kidney stone formation, but also lowers fluid retention. Inhibitcrystal formation in the urine by taking 50mg of zinc. Support immune functions by taking vitamin E. Stimulate your kidneys with supplements of potassium, but not if your serum potassium level is elevated. L-arginine and l-methionine improve kidney function and are helpful for kidney disease patients. Take multimineral complex for correcting mineral depletion. Before taking vitamins, ask your doctor about what the best vitamin plan is for you.
