Nutritional Values of Semi-Skimmed Milk

Semi-skimmed milk, also known as low-fat milk, is a staple at many grocery stores. There are two major types of semi-skimmed milk, 1 percent and 2 percent milk fat. Both of these versions are healthier than regular whole milk, as they have more of the fat removed. With that being said, there are both positives and negatives, nutritionally, to this type of milk.
  1. Calories

    • The 2 percent version of semi-skimmed milk has 122 calories per 1-cup serving. The 1 percent version of semi-skimmed milk only has 102 calories in a 1-cup serving. This is because of the lower milk-fat content, as a good portion of the calories comes from the fat in both versions of skimmed milk.

    Fat

    • The 2 percent version of semi-skimmed milk has 5 g of fat. Of this fat, 3 g are saturated. This is 15 percent of your daily recommended amount of saturated fat. The 1 percent version has only 2 g of fat. These 2 g are saturated fat, which comes to only 8 percent of your daily value of saturated fat. The 2 percent version has slightly more healthy fat than the 1 percent version (1.6 g of unsaturated fats vs. 0.8 g unsaturated fats).

    Protein

    • Protein is important for the growth of your muscles, as well as for repair of the muscles. Protein is also important for your hair, your skin and your nails. One serving of 2 percent skim milk has 8.1 g of protein. This is 16 percent of your daily value of protein. The 1 percent version actually has slightly more protein, 8.2 g of protein per serving.

    Vitamins

    • Both 1 percent and 2 percent skimmed milk have similar nutritional values as fat as vitamins are concerned. Both have 10 percent of more of vitamin D, riboflavin, and vitamin B12. Vitamin D is important for food absorption, as well as calcium transportation in the body, according to NutritionData.

    Minerals

    • Both 1 percent and 2 percent versions of skimmed milk are high in calcium. Both have around 290 mg of calcium. This is 29 percent of your daily value of calcium, which is important for strong teeth and bones. Both versions also have 23 percent of your daily value of phosphorus. Phosphorus is important for different chemical reactions in the body.
