What Are the Ingredients Contained in Primal Defense Ultra Vegan?

Among its lineup of raw foods, weight management products and beauty supplies, health food and supplement manufacturer Garden of Life offers Primal Defense Ultra, a capsule-based supplement. Though not specifically made for vegans, these all-natural caplets are vegetarian friendly. Primal Defense Ultra claims to support the absorption of nutrients and promote digestive and immune system health via its blend of probiotic ingredients.

  1. Active Ingredients

    • Each capsule of Primal Defense Ultra contains 1.8mg of iron and 290mg of ionic plant based minerals. The supplement's proprietary blend of probiotics -- called homeostatic soil organisms or HSOs -- contains the yeast saccharomyces boulardii, barley grass, oat grass and probiotic microrganisms bifidobacterium bifidum, bifidobacterium breve and bifidobacterium lactis. The HSO blend also contains the friendly bacterium lactobacillus plantarum, bacillus subtilis, lactobaciullus brevis, lactobaciullus acidophilus, lactobaciullus casei, lactobacillus rhamnosus and lactobacillus salivarius. The Primal Ultra Defense vegetarian caplet contains 410mg of this HSO blend.

    Inactive Ingredients

    • In addition to iron, plant based minerals and the HSO probiotic blend, Garden of Life's Primal Defense Ultra vegetarian capsules contain numerous inactive ingredients, mostly in the form of the cellulose that composes the capsule's shell. The capsule also contains rice maltodextrin and the vegetable source known as magnesium stearate. These inactive elements make up a total of less than 0.5 percent of the caplet's total ingredients.

    Purpose of Ingredients

    • Probiotics are a live culture, which Garden of Life claims help assimilate nutrients in the digestive system, where they support gastrointestinal balance and normal bowel function. The company also says that the HSO blend benefits the immune system. Bacillus subtilis is said to support regular bacteria in lactic acid while saccharomyces boulardii helps mucosa cells form a barrier around the intestinal epithelium, which bolsters immune system health. None of Garden of Life's claims have been evaluated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

    Considerations

    • Garden of Life recommends taking one Primal Defense Ultra caplet per day with an 8-oz glass of water, gradually increasing your uptake to three times per day on an empty stomach. Primal Defense Ultra's probiotics are cultured in dairy products, though traces of this dairy usually disappear during the fermentation process. Garden of Life's supplementary capsules do not contain any gluten, artificial colors or preservatives. Consult your doctor before using Primal Defense Ultra. Due to the capsule's iron content, children under the age of six can overdose on Primal Defense Ultra, which is not intended for children.
