Tonalin is a trademarked brand name for a nutritional supplement containing conjugated linoleic acid obtained from safflower oil. Tonalin CLA is a stimulant-free weight loss supplement intended to block the enzyme lipoprotein lipase which is responsible for storing excess fat in your body. Tonalin is primarily marketed as a weight loss supplement but has potential benefits in other areas of health.-
Fat Loss
-
Studies published in journals such as the Journal of International Medical Research and the American Journal of Clinical Research have demonstrated that CLA significantly reduces body fat and may promote modest weight loss. A a study reported in 2007 in the Journal of Food Science found that CLA significantly reduces body fat in mice and may serve as an effective preventative measure to weight gain.
Cancer
-
CLA may help to prevent and fight cancer in several ways. CLA is an antioxidant which may stop the development of cancer cells. Studies completed by Michael Pariza in the early 1980s demonstrated that CLA can stop the growth of tumors. A report of studies conducted in animals published in 2002 in the Canadian Journal of Applied Physiology included positive results demonstrating that CLA may be used to prevent or combat cancer. Of particular interest is the connection between CLA and prevention of breast cancer. Animal and human studies completed by Dr. Patricia Masso-Welch in 2000 to 2004 demonstrated that CLA may be linked to lower rates of breast cancer.
Diabetes
-
Tonalin may aid in the regulation of blood glucose and insulin. In a study published in the Journal of Nutrition in 2003, researchers performing animal studies demonstrated that CLA normalizes impaired glucose tolerance in non insulin-dependent diabetes. CLA isomers share many of the attributes of the clinical thiazolidinedione drug, troglitazone. CLA, however does not have as many side effects. CLA may be effective as an insulin-sensitizing agent for treatment of Type II diabetes.
Artherosclerosis
-
Tonalin CLA may prove to be an effective preventative supplement and treatment for artherosclerosis, which refers to plaque that forms in the arteries due to cholesterol and other substances. Tonalin CLA has been examined by researchers An article published in 2002 in the journal Nutritional Research explored the effect it has on decreasing cholesterol and triglycerides with promising results in rabbits.
Immune System
-
Tonalin CLA may enhance immune system function and protect against catabolic effects of immune stimulation. Research completed in 2001 on rodents suggests that CLA may ease the inflammation that occurs when the immune system is challenged. Drs. Mark Cook and Michael Pariza at the University of Wisconsin discovered that chicks who were fed CLA later displayed a decrease in the catabolic effects of exposure to endotoxin.
