Psyllium Husk Information

Psyllium husk, also known as ispaghula, is the coating of the psyllium plant seeds and grows primarily in the area surrounding the Middle East. Psyllium husk comes in the form of capsules or powder and has many different uses.
  1. Primary Use

    • Psyllium husk is used to promote colon health and to prevent constipation. It is a natural fiber that acts as a laxative. Psyllium husk is effective for bowel problems because upon contact with water, the husk swells and forms a gelatin-like mass in the colon that absorbs toxins and keeps the bowels soft.

    Benefits

    • Psyllium husk can provide fiber to people on a low-carbohydrate diet. It is also believed to maintain healthy cholesterol and blood pressure levels. According to the FDA, people on a low-saturated fat and low-cholesterol diet who consume 3 to 12 grams of psyllium husk daily reduce their risk of heart disease.

    Consuming Psyllium Husk

    • Psyllium husk should be consumed with plenty of liquid to prevent dehydration. It can be mixed into anything from water and fruit juices to soups and milk. Because psyllium husk can dilute enzymes, it should be consumed between meals to avoid digestive problems. It is not uncommon to experience diarrhea, gas or bloating when first taking psyllium husk because your digestive system has to get used to the dietary product.
