Ways to Eat Whey
Whey is a byproduct of cheese making. Cheese is made by clotting the milk of an animal, such as a cow. The solid part created by this process becomes cheese and the liquid part is the whey. Whey contains protein and several nutrients from the milk. Whey is often sold as a powder to be used as a supplement, or its proteins are dried and sold as whey protein.-
Supplement Straight-Up
-
Whey protein is often sold as a supplement as either whey protein concentrate or isolate. Whey protein concentrate is manufactured by drying out the whey and removing non-protein constituents, which result in a product that is 25 percent or more protein. Whey protein isolate is also sold as a powder and is 90 percent or more protein. Eat whey protein supplements by mixing the powder with water or juice.
Supplement Mixed in Food
-
The whey powder, or whey protein concentrate or isolate can also be mixed into a smoothie or yogurt so its taste is disguised. Mixing the powder into pudding, soy milk or other food is also an option.
Supplement Used in Cooking
-
The whey powder can also be used in cooking. It can be added to the dry ingredients in recipes, such as homemade oatmeal where it is added to the oats before they are cooked. It can also be put into baking, such as muffin or cookie recipes.
