Where to Find Turmeric
A 2010 interview between Fox News's "Medicine Hunter" Chris Kilham and Dr. Manny Alvarez revealed that a common kitchen condiment called turmeric may prevent, and even cure, Alzheimer's disease. Since hearing the hopeful news, many individuals have been searching the Internet to learn more about this powerful spice.-
Southeast Asia
-
In India and China, turmeric is both a food and a medicine. Ayurveda, which is the traditional healing system of India, prescribes turmeric for many health concerns including wound healing and infections, while Traditional Chinese Medicine, or TCM, uses it for depression.
Grocery Stores
-
Most grocery stores in America carry turmeric in the baking aisle along with the other spices. If you cannot find turmeric, look for curry powder, which is an aromatic blend of turmeric, coriander, cumin, fenugreek and other savory spices. Add curry powder to your meals, especially rice, chicken and stir-fry dishes.
Health Food Stores
-
Whether shopping in-store or online, nearly all health food stores carry turmeric supplements. The most widely used formulation is encapsulated powder taken three times a day. Look for a product standardized for 95% curcumin, which is the marker compound in turmeric. Combination formulas such as those containing chlorella or bromelain enable the body to better absorb the turmeric. Many stores also offer powdered turmeric in a convenient shaker to add to food.
