Is Brewer's Yeast for Gaining Weight?

Brewer's yeast, or Saccharomyces cervisiae, is most commonly known for its use in brewing beer. Now sold in vitamin and health food stores, it has gained popularity as a nutritional supplement.
  1. Dietary Supplement

    • Containing many vitamins and minerals including large amounts of vitamin B, brewer's yeast in its deactivated form can help maintain a healthy body. Sold in pill, powder and flake form, brewer's yeast has several uses, but the idea of it causing weight gain is heavily disputed.

    Chromium

    • According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, the chromium contained in brewer's yeast may reduce blood sugar levels and improve tolerance of glucose. In a study reported in Current Therapeutic Research, chromium was also shown to aid in weight loss.

    Protein

    • Bodybuilders often use brewer's yeast as a protein supplement and energy booster, giving it a reputation as an aid in gaining weight. With over 50 percent of its weight being protein, brewer's yeast also provides a non-animal, protein-rich supplement for vegans.
