What is Bifidobacterium Lactis?
Bifidobacterium Lactis is a probiotic existing in small quantities in the gut. Probiotics
-
Probiotics are beneficial bacteria that are thought to encourage a healthy digestive tract. Already naturally occurring in the intestine, evidence supporting supplementation with additional probiotics is limited. Despite this, spending on probiotic supplements and probiotic-fortified foods in the U.S. has greatly increased in recent years.
History
-
Frenchman Henry Tissier discovered Bifidobacterium Lactis in 1900 and suggested that it could be used to treat intestinal ailments. However, significant further research was not conducted until after 1950.
Purported Benefits
-
It is important to note that as of 2010 most studies of Bifidobacterium Lactis have been funded by the food industry and manufacturers of probiotic supplements. Claims of benefits of Bifidobacterium Lactis relating to digestion include reducing acid reflux and colon inflammation and preventing diarrhea while relieving constipation. Other purported benefits include stimulating the body's immune system, treating eczema in food allergy sufferers and counteracting the effects of celiac disease.
