Pyrithione Zinc Uses

Pyrithione Zinc is an antibacterial and antifungal agent. Developed by scientist in the 1930's, it is most commonly found in shampoos to eliminate dandruff. Regulated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), it is used in many over-the-counter soap, lotions, and creams. Given pyrithione zinc's antibacterial and antifungal properties, it is also used in industrial products and household cleaning items.
  1. Treat Scalp and Skin Ailments

    • Dandruff shampoo helps prevent flaking skin on the scalp.

Pyrithione Zinc works to control dandruff by slowing the production of skin cells, which reduces flakiness on the scalp. Pyrithione zinc also alleviates the symptoms of psoriasis with its antifungal and antibacterial properties. It also treats seborrheic dermatitis by preventing excessive oil secretions from the sebaceous glands.

    Antibacterial Treatment

    • Sponges may be holding bacteria.

Pyrithione Zinc is often used for its antibacterial properties, in items like household sponges, floor mops, and air filters. The added pyrithione zinc kills the bacteria and other microbes preventing them from colonizing. It is helpful in preventing the spread of bacteria when cleaning.

    Preservative

    • Pyrithione zinc has a low water solubility making it suitable to use in antifoulant paints. This kind of paint is used on boats below the water line to limit the growth of slime, algae and other marine fouling organisms. When used in house paints, it helps control the growth of mold and mildew. Pyrithione zinc disrupts the respiration of the organisms' cells inhibiting their growth and preventing them from accumulating.
