Components of Fish Oil

Fish oil is found in the fat of cold-water fish. It has been shown to provide benefits for circulatory and cardiac health. The main components of fish oil are the omega-3 essential fatty acids eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA).
  1. Eicosapentaenoic Acid (EPA)

    • EPA has been shown to have beneficial effects on coronary heart disease, high blood pressure and inflammatory disorders. It is also needed for normal growth and development in children.

    Docosahexaenoic Acid (DHA)

    • DHA also comes from cold-water fatty fish and accompanies EPA. DHA is essential for proper functioning of the human brain. This omega-3 fatty acid is important for the development of vision and the nervous system during the first six months of life.

    Dietary Recommendations

    • Most studies suggest taking 1,000 to 2,500 mgs of omega-3 fatty acids per day. It is recommended to consume two to three servings of fatty fish per week which will amount to an intake of 1,250 mgs EPA and DHA per day.
