How to Buy Whey Protein in Bulk

Whey protein is one of the two types of protein found in cow's milk. It is high in essential amino acids and low in fat, lactose and cholesterol. According to the Whey Protein Institute (WPI) it has "benefits in sports nutrition, weight management, immune support, bone health, general wellness" and is considered the most nutritious protein available.
  1. How It Is Made

    • Whey is created during the cheese making process.

WPI says that curd, the second type of protein called casein, and some of the milk fat is separated from the whey to make cheese. The remaining liquid is then filtered to separate the whey from other ingredients including lactose. It is purified and dried, leaving the powder we know as whey protein.

    Different Types of Whey

    • The more the liquid is filtered, the higher the whey content.

There are different types of whey protein powder available. According to WPI, the one that is considered the "most pure" and has the most protein content is protein isolate. WPI says other types of whey can have protein content varying from 29 percent to 89 percent and contains more fat and lactose.

    Buying in Bulk

    • Keeping the powder in an airtight container is important when buying in bulk.

There are many options for purchasing the protein in bulk including nutrition stores and online. But be aware that whey protein is a dairy product and it can spoil. The cholesterol in the powder can oxidize, just like the cholesterol in refrigerated dairy products. A study conducted by the University of Granada found that the cholesterol oxidation in dairy powder similar to whey protein "increased dramatically" after six months, even when sealed and kept at room temperature. The study stated that oxidation occurs when the powder is exposed to oxygen over time, so airtight containers and cool temperatures are key to the powders longevity.
