Glutamic Acid Tablets Uses

Glutamic acid is one of 20 amino acids the body makes for itself from protein found in foods. It helps the brain break down ammonia and use antioxidants. Because it has a variety of health benefits, you may elect to purchase glutamic acid as a dietary supplement. However "free", or manufactured, glutamic acid may produce unpleasant or even dangerous side effects or allergic reactions, so be very careful if supplementing.
  1. Heart Health

    • Some people take glutamic acid for general heart health, to strengthen the cardiac muscle. It may also be useful in combating heart disease and chest pain from heart disease. Glutamic acid may actually protect against further deterioration of the heart muscle.

    Prostate Health

    • The normal prostate gland produces fluid containing large amounts of glutamic acid. Some people use glutamic acid tablets to combat benign prostate hypertrophy (BPH) -- the enlargement of the prostate gland that is common as men age. The goal is to reduce the urinary and sexual symptoms of BPH and prevent them from getting worse.

    Mental Health

    • Glutamic acid is an excitatory neurotransmitter -- it stimulates the brain and causes the blood to break down ammonia in the brain. Glutamic acid also facilitates the passage of potassium across the blood-brain barrier. Because glutamic acid is important to brain health, some people supplement their diets with this amino acid to combat everything from Alzheimer's disease and autism to epilepsy and schizophrenia.

    Warnings

    • Excessive amounts of glutamic acid -- especially as monosodium glutamate (MSG) can cause cognitive impairment. It can also cause allergic reactions. Before adding any supplement to your diet, discuss it with your doctor, who may have more information to help you decide whether this particular supplement is right for you.
