Problems With Ribose

Ribose is a kind of sugar called a monosaccharide, and it is one of the basic structures in DNA. It is commonly used as a dietary supplement, marketed as a way to increase energy during a workout. But just because ribose is naturally occurring in our bodies does not mean it is automatically beneficial when ingested as a supplement.
  1. Diarrhea

    • Though the side effects caused by ribose are not considered permanent, temporary onset of diarrhea is one of the common problems associated with consuming more than 15 grams of ribose per day.

    Nausea

    • A feeling of sickness can accompany ribose consumption, as well as other gastrointestinal problems like bloating and cramps.

    Headache

    • Ingesting too much ribose can cause mild headaches. To reduce the headaches, try cutting back on your ribose supplements or stop taking them for a while.

    Lightheadedness

    • Sometimes a person can feel lightheaded when they take more than the recommended dose of ribose. Remember that the maximum daily dose that is recommended is not to exceed 15 grams a day, and it should always be taken with food.
