Risks With Colloidal Silver
Colloidal silver is silver particles suspended in fluid. It is purported by some to have a multitude of health benefits. Marketers claim that some of the benefits of colloidal silver include improved immune function and that the mixture contains antiviral properties and antibacterial properties. Medical studies can't yet prove these benefits and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has taken action against some companies for claims they have made.-
Argyria
-
According to the Mayo Clinic, silver can build up in the body over time. This can cause argyria, a blue-gray skin discoloration. It affects the skin, eyes, internal organs, nails and gums. The discoloration is permanent, even after discontinuation of colloidal silver.
Organ Damage
-
The kidneys filter silver particles from the blood. Over time this may cause permanent kidney damage. Neurological damage can also result from colloidal silver exposure, with seizures being one of the most common neurological side effects.
Drug Interactions
-
According to Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, colloidal silver reduces the bioavailability of certain antibiotics, including tetracycline and quinolone. This renders the antibiotics less effective. It also binds to Penicillamine, which reduces the effectiveness of the drug.
General Side Effects
-
In addition to the more serious conditions, colloidal silver can cause less severe, more generalized symptoms. Headaches, upset stomach, and fatigue are among the most common reported, according to the National Center for Complimentary and Alternative Medicine.
