P-6 Supplements Side Effects

P6 is an over-the-counter supplement that is designed to enhance the body's natural testosterone levels. It works by using plant-based phytosterols to increase the speed at which the body uses testosterone, and by decreasing the factors that can limit testosterone production. P6 also blocks estrogen, which keeps testosterone levels in check. While P6 has not been reported to cause any side effects on its own, increasing testosterone levels and decreasing estrogen levels can cause them.
  1. Skin Conditions

    • Too much testosterone can lead to acne and other dermatitis issues. Seborrhea, a condition that creates dandruff and flaking of the skin on the face, can also occur as a result of too much testosterone in the body. Seborrhea can also cause the scalp and skin on the face to look and feel greasy.

    Hair Conditions

    • Male pattern baldness, which is characterized by a receding hairline and thinning of the hair at the crown, can occur as a result of increased amounts of testosterone. In women, excess testosterone can cause hirsutism, a condition that causes an excess growth of facial hair and body hair.

    Reproductive Side Effects

    • Because testosterone plays such a large role in the male reproductive system, too much of it can cause an increase in the number and duration of penile erections and an increase or decrease in libido. Some men may develop abnormally large mammary glands, which can lead to the appearance of breasts--a condition is known as gynecomastia.

    Mood Changes

    • Increasing the amount of testosterone in your body can lead to nervous system disorders that can include depression, anxiety, paresthesia (numb or tingling sensations of the skin), and frequent headaches.

    Other Side Effects

    • Nausea, jaundice and alterations in liver function have all been connected to increasing testosterone levels. Reduced clotting factors and bleeding in patients who are taking anti-coagulants have also been reported. Hypersensitivity to testosterone has been known to manifest in anaphylactoid reactions and skin conditions.
