Neptune Krill Oil Ingredients

Neptune Krill Oil is a trademarked product of the Canadian company Neptune Technologies & Bioresources. Krill are tiny shrimp that average about 2 inches in length. They are vital to the food chain as the primary food source for many marine mammals and fish. But the oil from krill have become an intriguing health supplement for humans as well. Proponents point to krill as being an even more potent source of omega-3 fatty acids than fish, but krill oil has other purported beneficial ingredients as well.
  1. Omega-3 Fatty Acids

    • Omega-3 fatty acids are referred to as essential because the human body needs them for proper cell function. Your body uses omega-3s for hormone production and its anti-inflammatory effect. Omega-3 also supports heart health, and wards off cardiovascular disease.

    Eicosapentaenoic Acid (EPA)

    • Eicosapentaenoic acid is one of several omega-3 fatty acids that is used by the human body. An increased intake of EPA can help lower the risk of coronary heart disease, high blood pressure, and inflammatory disorders, such as rheumatoid arthritis.

    Docosahexaenoic Acid (DHA)

    • Docosahexaenoic acid is another omega-3 fatty acid that helps with coronary heart disease, high blood pressure, and inflammatory disorders, like rheumatoid arthritis. DHA is crucial for the proper functioning of our brains as adults, and for the development of our nervous system and visual abilities during the early months of infancy.

    Omega-9 Fatty Acids

    • This fatty acid can lower cholesterol, atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries), and insulin resistance. It also improves immune function and provides protection against certain types of cancer.

    Phospholipids

    • Phospholipids are made up of phosphorous and lipids (fat). Every cell in your body is lined with phospholipids, especially your brain cells. The body needs phospholipids to grow and repair cells.

    Antioxidants

    • Antioxidants help stop free radicals, unstable atoms or molecules, from damaging your body. Free radicals can damage important parts of the cell, such as DNA. Krill oil has higher antioxidant levels than fish oil, including vitamin A, E and astaxanthin (a carotenoid-like substance).

    Astaxanthin

    • Astaxanthin has many health benefits. It is a powerful immune-supporting antioxidant. It can also protect your nervous system from oxidative damage. This may reduce your risk of Alzheimer's sisease, Parkinson's disease, amotropic lateral sclerosis, and even strokes and seizures. Astaxanthin also reduces your chances of age-related cataracts and macular degeneration. The astaxanthin found in krill oil also provides excellent protection against ultravoilet light and UV-induced skin damage. It has nearly five times the antioxidant power of coenzyme Q10.
