Citric Acid Side Effects

Citric acid is a weak acid found in citrus fruits like lemons, limes and oranges. It is also found in some berries. Citric acid binds well with minerals and thus is often used with calcium to assist in the body's absorption of calcium as well as other minerals.
  1. Erosion of Tooth Enamel

    • According to the Dental Health Community, citric acid may erode tooth enamel making teeth more susceptible to tooth sensitivity and possibly cavities.

    Heartburn

    • The lower esophageal sphincter, located at the end of the esophagus, opens and closes to allow food to pass to the stomach. According to physicians at the Mayo Clinic, it's possible that citric acid can cause the lower esophageal sphincter to relax, thus allowing acids to flow up into the esophagus, causing heartburn.

    Diarrhea

    • Diarrhea and an upset stomach may be a result of citric acid consumption.

    Kidney Stones

    • Citric acid can produce an increase in oxalate production, raising those levels in the urine and leading to the production of kidney stones.

    Skin Irritation

    • Citric acid is often used in lotions and facial masks. Individuals with sensitive skin may develop a rash or redness from the acidity of such lotions.
