Glutathione Explanation
Glutathione is found in every cell of the body, where it has several important functions. Known as a "master antioxidant," glutathione can be increased by taking certain supplements.-
Importance
-
Glutathione has three critical roles in the body. It acts as an antioxidant to neutralize toxins, it helps synthesize DNA, and it prevents damage to other important molecules like proteins and vitamins.
Chemistry
-
Glutathione is a small protein made of three amino acids. Its important functions in the body stem from its sulfur atom, which makes it useful as an antioxidant.
Sources
-
All cells in the body synthesize their own glutathione, so it is not necessary in the diet. Glutathione is made in steps by two different enzymes, GCS and GSH.
Deficiency
-
A deficiency of glutathione may be caused by a deficiency of one of two of the precursors necessary for the body to manufacture it. Cysteine, one of the amino acid "ingredients," may be a limiting factor, and inadequate amounts of the enzyme GCS can also cause a glutathione deficiency in cells.
Supplements
-
Supplementing with glutathione is not effective because it is not absorbed easily. Instead, supplements that help the body synthesize glutathione can be used, including SAM-e and whey protein.
