Side Effects of Eurycoma
Eurycoma, also called Tongkat Ali, is a shrub that is native to Southeast Asia. Its bark and roots have been used to treat erectile dysfunction, cancer, impotence, syphilis, infertility, headache, diarrhea, fever, cough, malaria, bone pain, ulcers, tuberculosis and high blood pressure. There is insufficent scientific evidence, however, to prove whether Eurycoma is actually beneficial for any of these conditions, according to WebMD.-
How it Works
-
Eurycoma is thought to work by increasing the production of testosterone. It has become popular among bodybuilders because of testosterone's effects on muscle-building. The increase in testosterone levels, however, may lead to certain side effects such as personality changes, according to Tongkat Ali Guide. These can include anger, rage and aggressiveness. According to Iron Magazine, Eurycoma has also been shown to have effects on libido and male reproductive organs in animal studies.
Dosage
-
Not enough testing has been done to determine a safe and effective dosage of Eurycoma, according to Iron Magazine. One gram is considered to be the supplemental dose maximum, but the overall potency of the product will ultimately determine the dosage. Those taking Eurycoma should do so only under close doctor supervision, and this herb should only be taken orally.
Side Effects
-
In addition to personality changes, Eurycoma's side effects can include insomnia and enlarged prostate, according to Iron Magazine. According to Tongkat Ali Guide, other potential side effects include decreased sex drive due to insomnia, increased body temperature, pressure in the testicles, irritability, agitation, restlessness, becoming angry easily, facial flushing, impatience, head warmth, aggressiveness and drowsiness. Increased heart rate, excessive energy and sweating also may occur. People who have heart disease or high blood pressure may experience heart palpitations.
Contraindications
-
Eurycoma should be avoided by people with breast cancer, liver disease, prostate cancer, sleep apnea, heart disease, diabetes and kidney disease, according to Tongkat Ali Guide. Those with a weak immune system also should avoid this supplement because it may weaken their immune system further. Eurycoma may also lead to a decrease in blood sugar levels, so those with low blood sugar problems, such as hypoglycemia, may not be able to take this supplement. According to RxList, pregnant or breastfeeding women should not take eurycoma, nor should children.
Drug Interactions
-
According to Herb Master, immunosuppressant drugs may adversely interact with Eurycoma, leading to additional side effects and further complications that could be dangerous for the patient. Blood pressure medications also may adversely interact with Eurycoma.
