The leaves of the cha de bugre tree are used most often used. According to Rain Tree, the standard infusion consists of 1 cup at least 30 minutes prior to meals. The standard tincture consists of 2 to 3 milliliters, up to three times a day. The standard capsules contain 2 to 3 grams of cha de bugre and are most often taken twice a day.

Other actions include reducing fever and killing viruses. It is used to suppress the appetite, promote weight loss, as a diuretic, as a cardiotonic (balance, tone and strengthen the heart), as a stimulant, to help treat herpes simplex, to promote wound healing and to suppress cough. RxList states that it may be used for weight loss, cancer, obesity, gout, edema and heart disease.

According to Rain Tree, this herb contains natural caffeine, so many of the side effects occur due to the caffeine. According to Medline Plus, the side effects of caffeine include increased heart rate, trouble sleeping, excessive urination, tremors, nausea, depression, nausea, restlessness, vomiting and anxiety. This herb is said to be an appetite suppressant, and this component can also cause cha de bugre side effects. According to Medicine Net, these include blurred vision, constipation, dizziness, upset stomach, dry mouth, irritability and insomnia. The more serious side effects of appetite suppressants include chest pain, swelling, nervousness, trouble breathing, pounding heart, mood changes and trouble urinating.

Consuming caffeine with certain medications may lead to further cha de bugre side effects. According to WebMD, these include stimulants, birth control pills, Fluconazole, diabetes medications, Lamisil and Mexitil. According to Medicine Net, the appetite suppressant component of cha de bugre may interact with high blood pressure medications, cold medications, MAO inhibitors, cough medications, other weight loss medications, decongestants and other stimulants.
